Graphistudio Presentations at Focus On Imaging 2010
Posted by Paul in For Website, General, News on March 10th, 2010
Focus On Imaging is always good fun if you’re into photography – with plenty to look at and listen to, it’s one of the key dates in a UK Photographer’s diary. This year, though, we were also presenting our work on Graphistudio’s stand – and we’ve had a fantastic time!
So, a huge ‘thank you’ to Graphistudio for asking us along (it’s a huge honour to be working with these guys – and their albums are simply stunning!) and to everyone who came and sat through our musings. We’ve had loads of really lovely comments so I hope everyone found it useful/amusing/entertaining/a good place to sleep*
For everyone who was there (and for anyone else who’s interested) we’re posting the two AV’s we used yesterday. I know the plasma wasn’t brilliant but hopefully it didn’t prove too much of a distraction.
I should point out that we have now licensed this website with the music guys at PRS/MCPS (I think they’re now called the Music Alliance) so that we can use and show our slideshows online. This is something that we couldn’t really do before so watch this space and hopefully we’ll get more of our slideshow content up here.
Cheers

Paul Wilkinson Photography presenting at Focus On Imaging 2010
Posted by Paul in For Website, News on February 24th, 2010
Just had the link through from Graphistudio: I’m going to be on their stand doing to 40-minute seminars at the UK’s largest photographic trade show – Focus on Imaging – that runs from 7th-10th March at the NEC in Birmingham.
Graphistudio are the world’s largest album supplier (and they make the most beautiful books you can imagine!) so it’s a real honour to be asked along!
Given the number of wedding photographers presenting at the show, I thought I’d talk about something that’s close to my (and any other parent’s) heart: the art of photographing kids. We’ve titled it:
“Teens, toddlers, tykes and triptychs”: The business of photographing children.
This is the best job in the world which always makes it a joy to talk about so, as you might imagine, I’m really excited about it. We’ll be there on Tuesday 9th March so if you’re around pop in and say hello!
Hmmm, I now have the challenge of sitting down and writing something. Where’s that pen….?!
The books are out!
Posted by Paul in Chat, For Website, News on February 12th, 2010
Well, we have finally finished it! Yes, after much (and I do mean, much) deliberation we have finally managed to get our 2010 portfolio book finished and out.
Having waded through thousands (I’m not kidding) of photographs, all of which we love, we have put together the images that we think best represent everything we are about. Some of the images we selected are there because they’re simply beautiful. Some of them are there because we had an amazing time working with that particular client – it’s an emotional thing. But all of them are there because they make us smile!
Hopefully, by the time you read this, the books will have made their way into our usual list of locations — Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons, The Crazy Bear and Little Italy amongst others — and are already being excitedly thumbed through by both our existing clients and some new clients we haven’t yet had the privilege of meeting.
Even after all this time, I still get unbelievably excited when we publish our portfolios (and, later this month, we will be publishing an additional portfolio dedicated exclusively to our wedding photography!) I love seeing just how many amazing clients we’ve had over the past 12 months and how many beautiful images we’ve created with them. Every year I wonder how we going to do it again. Yet, every year, we still do. And I love it!
Have a flick through this digital preview and let us know what you think.
Here’s to another new and exciting 12 months of photography!

Yervant Seminar at London Zoo for Graphistudio
Posted by Paul in Commercial, For Website, News on November 12th, 2009
If you’re a photographer you’ve heard of Yervant. If you’re not a photographer, you’ll still know his images. This is one of the world’s true ‘heavyweight’ (in a creative sense of course) photographers. And he was in London as guests of our album supplier, Graphistudio.
Martin Baynes (who’s an old friend of ours and the UK Sales Manager for Graphistudio – you might remember me raving about the books that Graphistudio produce for us, often under incredible deadlines that our other suppliers simply can’t match!) asked us to capture some images for them to use for press and PR which was a real pleasure to do.
Yervant is an absolute legend in the photographic world but this seminar was as much about his wife, Annie, as it was about him and his images (and they are both hugely engaging characters on stage!)
It is, in fact, she that has taken what he does and turned it into an international business at the pinnacle of the industry. It is her work and her business-like approach that has made the Yervant brand (both in terms of the name and the iconic images) what it is today.
This was possibly the most interesting seminar I’ve been to from the perspective as it reminded me of how our company works: yes, I capture the images; yes, it’s my signature everywhere; yes, it’s my ability to see and seek out locations and light; but it’s Sarah who picks out those priceless images for our clients (she sees the world differently to me – she’s only influenced by what a bride or parent would wish to see rather than a photographer’s desire for the dramatic or the moody. Don’t get me wrong, these are important too but you need a healthy balance.) It’s Sarah who talks to most of our clients, helping to understand what is required and make sure we provide it. It is Sarah who watches the numbers and makes sure we’re on track. It’s Sarah who manages our alarmingly complex diary. It is Sarah who crafts our amazing slideshows. Quite simply, I would not be in a position to create the images that I do if it wasn’t for the fact we run the business together.
And that’s the point.
Sometimes, when I’m desperately trying to capture a particular image or moment, it’s easy to forget that this is a business. I am lucky as it’s the business of memories. It’s the business of beautiful images. It’s the business of bringing joy (and, occasionally, poignancy) to our clients. But, and here’s the rub, it’s still a business. A very successful business with the most incredible clients that we are both hugely proud of.
And seeing Annie and Yervant side by side (and please forgive the pun here) brought that sharply into focus.
Brilliant.
We’re in The Times
Posted by Paul in For Website, News on November 8th, 2009
Well, that’s not quite true – a picture we took of Andy and Vashti Bedwell is in the Times today (Saturday).
Our stuff appears in all sorts of magazines and publications (we had notice from Dorling Kindersley this week that three more of our images have been published in their books) but when you can walk into a newsagents on a Saturday morning and buy a proper newspaper with one of your portrait images in it, it’s not a bad day!

Presentation to the Metropolitan Police Photographic Society
Posted by Paul in For Website, News on June 14th, 2009
I know. Came as surprise to me too! Didn’t even know there was such a thing. But there is and – and I say this with much relief – it’s a hugely vibrant and friendly society!
I had absolutely no idea what to expect when I arrived at New Scotland Yard to present to the society. I’d had a couple of phone calls and emails in the months leading up to me going over there and both Steve (who had initially approached me out of the blue) and Chanon (their ents coordinator) seemed really really nice. But still. The Metropolitan Police Photographic Society? What would they make of a portrait photographer?
Shouldn’t have worried. You could not have asked for a nicer crowd. As it turns out, they’re a mix of police and ‘civilian’ enthusiasts and pros with a hugely wideranging interest in photography. You couldn’t ask for a nicer crowd to present to and, as usual, I enjoyed every second of it!
Now, I do have a slight admission to make here. And that is, I rather enjoy showing my work to people. Can’t help it. I’m immensely proud of what we do and, based on the feedback we get, we make a lot of people happy doing it. I have the best job in the world and I am always happy to talk about it. Possibly a little too happy given the glazed-over look that people who’ve been around me for any period of time develop.
Still, in this particular instance I had been asked to go and talk about our work so I hope it wasn’t a great surprise to the audience that I bounced, laughed and generally chatted my way through two hours of photography and stories. Some of which were actually on-topic!
So, a huge thank you to a group of really nice photographers who took the time to listen to me drone on in their auditorium and then (as if that weren’t enough) bought me a beer or two – which is never a good idea given my ability to wax lyrical about all things photography!
I can only hope they enjoyed it as much as I did!
All the best
Cheers

Presentation to Princes Risborough Photographic Society
Posted by Paul in For Website, News on May 19th, 2009
Last night I had the greatest pleasure of presenting some of our work to the Princes Risborough Photographic Society.
We’ve been asked to do quite a few talks and presentations this year and I have to admit I love doing them! Can’t help myself: a room full of interested or, at least, captive photographers is always going to bring out the worst in me!
So, I talked through everything we do, showed some slideshows, described what we do, tried to antagonise traditionalists and generally laughed my way through two hours of experiences and anecdotes.
These things are always just a little daunting as the collective knowledge in any good photographic society (and these guys are good – they’ve just won the Chiltern Camera Clubs print competition and having seen their prints I can absolutely see why!) dwarfs what any one person can know but, I am happy to say, they were pretty gentle with me (even the Canon users) and I think – or at least hope – everyone enjoyed it!
So a HUGE thank you to everyone who came to hear my idle musings – I had an absolute ball and loved every minute of it and I really hope it was at least a little useful
I am now thoroughly looking forward to the next presentation for the Metropolitan Police Photographic Society!
Cheers

A Class Act?
Posted by Paul in For Website, News on April 24th, 2009
Just a quick one – I am one of 3 photographers featured in this week’s British Journal of Photography cover story: ‘Class Acts’. OK OK, so I’m blowing my own trumpet but it’s always nice to read someone else say things like:
“Julian Lass meets three award-winning portrait shooters combining the best of modern and contemporary. Grounded in craft-based black and white techniques and using their highly developed lighting skills together with a more relaxed approach to posing, they’re bucking the trend and increasing sales by pushing their creative, professional expertise. Just good enough doesn’t cut it.”
OK, so maybe I’m blowing the trumpet a little hard to but you’ve got to admit, that’s not a bad opening line for an article when you’re one of those three photographers!
The whole article (though sadly not all of the pictures that are in the magazine) can be found on the BJP Online Site.
Let us know you comments. I would be really interested to know if you think the article is right!
Enjoy.

Paul Wilkinson Wins Accolade of Excellence in the WPPI 2009 Awards of Excellence
Posted by Paul in For Website, News on March 1st, 2009
I quite like this one. We entered some of our images into the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) Awards and have just received notice that we’ve won an Accolade of Excellence!
This is the press release:
Paul Wilkinson of Haddenham, England, has received special honours in the WEDDING & PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHERS INTERNATIONAL (WPPI) 2009 Awards of Excellence 16×20 Print Competition. Designed to recognize outstanding photographers, the judging was held in Las Vegas, NV on February 14 and 15, 2009. ‘Time for Reflection’ received an Accolade of Excellence in the Group category. Wilkinson competed against an international field of photographers to win such honours. The Awards of Excellence 16×20 Print Competition awards are presented each year at the largest trade show, educational platform and convention in the United States for professional photographers. The 2009 competition included 2717 prints in 19 different categories submitted by photographers from all over the world.
Didn’t win it but we’re really pleased given this is our first entry into this worldwide competition, to have been judged in the top few. Still, there’s always next year…

Bucks Herald Competition
Posted by Paul in For Website, News on February 28th, 2009
We have launched a competition this week in conjunction with the Bucks Herald to win £1250 of photography and frames. If you’re interested in winning or would like a £50 voucher off the price of a shoot then why not pop down to your local (and, of course, friendly) newsagent.
The competition winner will be photographed either at the studio or out on location. Our photo sessions are always very relaxed and it’s this approach that creates his distinctive images (at least, I think it does!)
Following the shoot the winner will be invited back to the studio to enjoy the magic of seeing the results. They will then select images they would like in beautiful hand finished frames or as matted prints to bring the final value to £1250.
And, even if you are not lucky enough to win the main prize, you could still treat yourself to a photo session with the exclusive voucher for £50 off our regular shoot fee of £95.
For more information please email us at: competition@paulwilkinsonphotography.co.uk or phone us on 01844 290 054.
Of course, there do have to be a couple of conditions:
1. The main prize is to the value of £1250 consisting of the shoot fee (normally £95), our medium to large frames (prices starting from £295) and/or our matted prints (normally £45 each)
2. Voucher is valid until 30th April 2009 and is subject to availability
So go on, pick up a paper and see if you win – it’s got to be worth a go!
Cheers

As recommended by Le Manoir aux Quat’Saixons
Posted by Paul in For Website, News, Weddings on February 10th, 2009
Well I know that every day the news on the TV and radio seems to be incessantly gloomy, but we seem to be having a rather fab start to 2009!
I will grant you it’s a little chilly. Now, I absolutely love the snow (it’s the kid in me – I’ll get our snow pictures up later today) but I’m no fan of the sleet’n’slush that we’re now enduring. And it’s really challenging for our normal outdoor photography. Red noses seldom add to the look of a sexy image.
Apart from that, we’re having a ball!
One high point so far this year has been that we’re now one of a select few photographers on Le Manoir aux Quat’Saixons recommended supplier list.
Right from the very outset we’ve strived to produce the best images, the highest quality products and an exemplary level of service – while still keeping our familiar informal and relaxed approach. And that is still very much the case. And to be viewed by Raymond Blanc as a supplier he would happily recommend is really exciting!
Now that’s not to say that I think we’ve ‘arrived’ – far from it. There are always things we can improve and develop. However, if the guys at one of the best restaurants and wedding venues in the UK think we’re doing OK then I have to admit it feels good!
Cheers

New Look Website
Posted by Paul in For Website, News on January 26th, 2009
Well it’s that time of year for a spring clean don’t you think? And to that end, you will no doubt have noticed the new skin on our website. Not really a full redesign – we’ll maybe do that later in the year – but just a lick of paint and a whole new set of colours. Dulux would be proud.
We’ve also updated the slideshows and portfolios with some new images – and some new technology behind the scenes to help us keep things up to date and fresh as we go along. Nice.
If you notice any odd colours or images not looking right it’s probably just because your browser is caching some old stuff so refresh the page a few times and that should fix things for you. If not, then drop us a line and I’ll see what’s up.
Enjoy and, as always, I’d love to hear what you think!
Cheers
